Birds along a shoreline with the warmest light!

I like to go out to a park or watery place most weekends, so I end up seeing a lot of the same birds over and over again. And each time I get to see them a little bit differently and capture something special. I can never say no to taking pictures of great blue herons, even though I probably have hundreds of pictures of them. I’m especially captivated when they’re actively hunting, and the image of the splash when they speed-dunk their head in the water is one of my favourite things!

A great blue heron wading in the water and looking intently into it as they lean forward, reflected in the still water.

A great blue heron has just plunged their head into the water, resulting in a big, elegant splash. The water they’re wading in is calm so there’s a wavy reflection of the heron and the splash.

A great blue heron is shaking their head vigorously after popping it up out of the water.

This evening the water was so still that everything was reflected beautifully. I love this mountainy watery view!

A landscape with a think line of dark land in the middle, water in the lower part of the image, and mountains and sky in the top part. A few trees dot the horizon and the whole photo has a warm blue hue.

I also see invasive starlings all the time. Most of the time I don’t pay much attention to them or try to photograph them, but this one was really interesting and close. I think it’s probably the time of year for it, but their plumage was more beautiful and spotted than I remember usually seeing. A lot of times they just look like plain black birds with pointy yellow beaks but the patterning was so visible on this one!

A starling is perched on a twisted wire looking to one side. Their beak is a very bright yellow and their feathers have a beautiful spotted pattern that almost looks like stars.

A starling viewed from the back. Their claws tightly clutch a twisted wire and their feathers are all fluffed up.

And cormorants are so fun to see! They have these gorgeous black feathers that I always want to try to capture. This one was in the perfect warm sunlight stretching their neck all around to look at everything. Their eyes are such an unlikely bright green! The colours were so pretty this time of day so I snapped a shot of this cargo ship with coordinating colour scheme.

A cormorant is standing on a post with their neck craned behind them like they’re looking back towards the light.
